Tumuaki COVID update | Rostering students home

Kia ora koutou

Further to my email last week we have now had to make the difficult call to begin rostering home junior students this week for At-Home Learning.  Please know we are only doing this as a last resort as we are unable to staff the school with current levels of both Covid-19 infections and other winter illnesses.

ROSTERING HOME – this week

YEAR 9 STUDENTS will be required to do ‘At home Learning’ on Tuesday 24 May and Wednesday 25 May.  They will be given their devices to take home this afternoon to help them with this.   They can return to onsite learning (with their device please) from Thursday 26 May.

YEAR 10 STUDENTS will be required to stay at home and complete Online Learning on Thursday 26 May and Friday 27 May. They will be given their devices to take home on Wednesday afternoon to help them with this.  They can return to onsite learning (with their device please) from Monday 30 May.

If any students would like an ‘at home learning pack’ then these are also available.  Also – if any students under 14 require at school supervision on these two days then please email [email protected] to confirm and we will make arrangements.

Unfortunately, it is not looking like there is any quick fix to this situation – I will do my best to get information to you in a timely manner and my sincere thanks to you all for your support of our school during these challenging times.

One of the best ways you can do that is to please keep any students who are unwell or have Covid-19 symptoms at home (please see below for more information). Our health team are having to deal with high numbers of students with Covid-19 symptoms who have not done a RAT test and still come to school.  This puts both our staff and other students at risk.  RAT tests are free from Community Health Centres if you have symptoms / or are a household contact so please do take advantage of this service.  Information about how to order a free RAT test is also given below.

COVID-19 symptoms

Symptoms can include one or more of the following:

  • a new or worsening cough
  • sneezing and runny nose
  • a fever
  • temporary loss of smell or altered sense of taste
  • sore throat
  • shortness of breath
  • fatigue/feeling of tiredness.

Less common symptoms may include:

  • diarrhoea
  • headache
  • muscle pain or body aches
  • nausea
  • vomiting
  • malaise — a general feeling of discomfort, illness or unease
  • chest pain
  • abdominal pain
  • joint pain
  • confusion or irritability.

These less common symptoms almost always occur with one or more of the common symptoms.

These symptoms do not necessarily mean you have COVID-19. The symptoms are like other illnesses that are much more common, such as colds and flu.

Shortness of breath is a sign of possible pneumonia and requires immediate medical attention.

If you have any of these symptoms, contact your doctor, Healthline on 0800 358 5453 or your iwi health provider.

Order RAT home testing kits

Requesting RATs to use at home is an easy step-by-step process. RATs can be requested on behalf of someone else. You will need access to a mobile phone to validate your order.

  • Online: requestrats.covid19.health.nz
  • Over the phone: 0800 222 478, choose option 3 (8am-8pm, 7 days a week)

You will be issued an order number. You can then collect your RAT order from a collection site listed on Healthpoint, or have someone collect it for you.
