Junior Students
INTRODUCTION
Edgewater College prides itself in being a school which offers a wide range of subjects to its students, in an attempt to meet the needs of each individual. Practical considerations such as timetable restrictions and class sizes mean that students should always have second choices ready.
Year 9The majority of Year 9 courses are compulsory.
A typical Year 9 course consists of English, Mathematics, Social Studies, Science, Physical Education, Health Education, Technology, Graphics, Art, Music and a choice of language (Te Reo Maori, Japanese, French, ESOL* or Language Skills*). If students choose to take two of the language options, one of the subjects in italics above will be reduced.
* ESOL is for students who do not speak English as their first language. Language Skills is for students who speak English as their first language but who need extra help with reading and written language.
Year 10A typical Year 10 course consists of English, Mathematics, Social Studies, Science,
Physical Education and two options.
Option subjects include Japanese, French, Te Reo Maori, ESOL, Language Skills, Art, Music, Food Technology, Textile Technology, Technology (Hard Materials), Graphics, Information Management, Enterprise Studies and Health Education.
CRITERIA FOR MOVING ONTO THE NEXT LEVELThe right of students to move to a higher level of study varies between subjects but there are some basic principles:
- Many subjects require a demonstrated level of mastery at one level before a student can progress to the next level.
- When you do meet the minimum requirements there is an automatic right of entry.
- When you do not meet the minimum requirements you must discuss the possibility of an exemption with the appropriate Head of Department.
- Some courses require a materials fee which is compulsory for all students taking that course.
